Cedar Rapidians, if you need a gift idea for your sweetie this Valentine's Day, why not check out some of these local businesses? It's important to shop small on consumerist holidays like this one to put money back into our local economy instead of into the hands of the big box stores and their wealthy owners. So here are some great places to spend your money if you are looking to do so.Analog Vault
Cedar Rapids is so lucky to have it's very own independent record store. It's owned by cool people and they offer used, new and local vinyl. Plus turntables, speakers, brand merch and a few local handmade products. Records have made a huge comeback, so if your honey is a collector, drop by and pick up a gift card. Or take them there to pick out their gift!
Find Analog Vault in the Newbo District at
215 11th Ave SE.
Lion Bridge Brewing Company
Lion Bridge is an award winning craft brewery in the heart of Czech Village. My husband is a huge fan of sours, and he got pretty excited when he saw these two Valentine's Day flavors of their Aldo dark sour. You can buy them in these wine shaped bottles that are perfect for gifting! Or consider taking your sweetie there for dinner; the menu is pretty fab, too.
Find Lion Bridge at 59 16th Ave SW.
Raygun is, first and foremost, a screen print t-shirt shop. Founded in Des Moines, there is now a branch in Cedar Rapids and they create the wittiest t-shirts ever. You can't walk out of this store without a good belly laugh. You can find something local-themed, political, sports-related, and a lot more. Added bonus: they raise money for a lot of great causes.
Find Raygun in Newbo District at 1028 3rd St SE.
Illuminations is a store I just love to walk around in...I always find something I like. If you need a gift for someone who likes mystical things like crystals, incense, gemstone jewelry or tarot cards, this is your go-to place. Or, you could purchase a class from their events page for your loved one.
Find Illuminations in the Cherry Building (Newbo District) at 329 10th Ave SE Suite 115.
Lots of people say "I'd really like to start doing yoga again" or are curious about trying yoga, but just haven't gotten around to it. If you know that person, here is your chance to surprise them with a yoga class punch card. They have classes for all levels and abilities - from chair yoga, prenatal and kids classes, all the way up to advanced.
Find Toula Yoga at 2720 1st Avenue NE, Suite 108.
These are just a few of my favorite places around town. I could list plenty more, but I'll save that for a future guide. Have a wonderful Valentine's Day, whether you are sharing it with someone or just treating yourself. All of the above would make a great gift to oneself, as well.
