Why Handmade Soap is Superior to Drugstore Bars

If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, like eczema, you may want to consider giving handmade soap a try. There are several reasons why that drugstore bar of soap is doing your skin an injustice. Read on to learn more about why handmade soap could be the solution to your dry, itchy skin.

It's Actually Soap!

When it comes to soap, handmade is the real deal! Unlike commercial imposters, handmade soap is created through a magical chemical reaction known as saponification, where lye (sodium hydroxide) and oils/fats come together to form the soap. Using a teensy lye deficit results in something soap makers call "superfat." This means that some of the oils are leftover to provide extra moisture to your skin every time you wash.

Most mass-produced soaps aren't even soap at all. They're filled with synthetic ingredients, detergents and lathering agents, which can be harsh on your skin. Make sure to keep an eye out for the real deal by checking the label – if the label says body wash or body bar, it may be a detergent. Hint: If the ingredient list looks like this, it's not really soap:

Ingredients: Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Sodium Oleate, Water (Eau), Sodium Isethionate, Sodium Stearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance (Parfum), Sodium Laurate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Kaolin or (ou) Titanium Dioxide

Real Soap Contains Glycerin

An ingredient you won't find on the label, but is one of handmade soap's superpowers, is glycerin. Glycerin is not added to the soap, but forms during saponification and it works wonders for your skin. It stays on the skin after washing, attracting moisture from the air like a magnet.

Now, here's a sly trick the big companies play: they remove the glycerin from their soaps to extend shelf life and sell it separately to be used in moisturizers. Sneaky, right? They strip the soap of its single most moisturizing ingredient and then sell it back to you in a lotion (which you will need after using their drying soap).

Handmade Soaps are Safer for the Environment

Most handmade soaps are crafted with biodegradable, natural ingredients. However, commercial soaps often contain synthetic substances that dissolve into our waterways and can harm aquatic life.

Body washes are packaged in wasteful single-use plastic bottles and body bars often come in glossy, non-recyclable boxes. Handmade soap isn't just better for your skin, it's a more sustainable choice for the planet.

Handcrafted with Love and Community

When you buy handmade soap, you're not just treating yourself; you're nurturing your community by supporting a small business owner. Handmade soap is made by a passionate artisan who pours their hearts into every bar.

So there you have it, folks! Handmade soap is a skin-loving, earth-caring and community-supporting wonder that deserves a place in your daily self-care routine.
